Justice League is almost upon us so you know what that means…its time to rank the DC Cinematic Universe (DCEU) from worst to best!  I’m so excited to rank these because DC kicked off my passion for superheroes.  Before I watched Smallville as a lil ol’ high school sophomore, I was that jock who thought superheroes were pretty lame.  Now I’m writing blog posts about men in tights!  Progress, right?  Maybe the dark, gritty adult themes in the DCEU is my saving grace from being a true man-child.  The dark tones in the films so far have been very thought provoking, which separates them from Marvel.  Don’t get me wrong, the Marvel films are great!  But I love how the DC films are different from the other superhero films.  But hey, we’re not here to talk about how DC compares to Marvel.  We’re here to see how the DCEU films stack up against each other!

4.  Suicide Squad

Suicide squad is my least favorite film in the series, thanks to the “alien” enemies and beam-in-the-sky villain that we’ve seen a thousand times before.  However, the Suicide Squad themselves were really entertaining to watch on the big screen.  I mean, a bunch of insane wild cards out to manipulate for thrills?  What’s not to love!  The team’s chemistry was great but I wish that the plot would have been better.  Maybe if the Joker and his antics were the main villain this film would be higher on the list.

3. Batman v Superman (Ultimate Cut)

Batman v. Superman Theatrical Cut?  Choppier than wakeboarding in a Hurricane.  The Ultimate Cut?  Pretty good film!  I really liked this film because the dark tone and character arcs told a great story.  Batman was introduced as an extremely jaded harbinger of death and regained his hope in humanity (but don’t worry he’ll still murder you with his bare hands!).   Superman was struggling to fit into a world where the media criticized and misinterpret every action he made.  Although it was an interesting dynamic to watch, I really want to see his character grow into the Superman we all know and love from the comics.  Overall, I loved how this film tackled themes and also brought some great action to the screen.

2. Wonder Woman

What happens when you skip over James Cameron and hire Patty Jenkins to direct a film about the most popular feminist icon?  You make over $800,000,000 at the box office!  While it is not my favorite film in the DCEU, it is arguably the most important because it breathed fresh life into a franchise that most considered, like my childhood dream of playing in the NBA, dead.  However, this underdog couldn’t have surprised us more.  Patty Jenkins found a way make a truly entertaining Wonder Woman film that also discussed themes like feminism, hope, and love.  Now we wait to see what Patty Jenkins does with the sequel, which is set for release in December 2019.  I’m not betting against this underdog again.

1. Man of Steel

It’s a bird!  It’s a plane!  It’s Nolan’s version of Superman!  Man of Steel brought a fresh new take to a character that belonged in a time when dial-up internet was considered fast.  I mean how do you make this character interesting in the 21st century?  It’s easy.  You make a film about a guy struggling to find his own path in the world and add amazing fight scenes to it.  The story is what drives the film and gives it heart.  At the end of the day, Man of Steel takes the top spot because it is a brilliant story about what it means to be human…what it means to be free.  Its about becoming something great.  That is what Superman is all about.
